Near and dear to my heart: Old Fashioned Milk Paint, a toy chest, and my menfolk…

I’ve long been a fan of powdered milk paint, and learned about milk paint while reading about furniture restoration–this was long before milk paint was popularized by THE Miss Mustard Seed. 🙂 So, in 2007 I purchased my first two pints of milk paint from Old Fashioned Milk Paint (OFMP), mixed a custom color using Federal Blue and Slate Black, used it to paint a pine bookcase Farm Boy built for me, and have loved it ever since.

The paint is unique in that it’s entirely VOC free (!), it comes in powdered form (YOU mix the paint with water), and it’s unpredictable: sometimes it chips on a sealed surface and sometimes it doesn’t.  Essentially, you get what you get and most of the time, that’s pretty great.

To the project at hand…

I had leftovers and used the same mix to paint a toy chest that Farm Boy’s grandpa built for him and it’s served as a coffee table, blanket storage, and currently,  a toy chest. My kids have used it (read: abused it!) for the last several years to corral dress-up clothes and it was time to give the thing some well-deserved and much-needed attention.

Enter the Fab Furniture Flippin Contest, Old Fashioned Milk Paint, and a “Farmhouse Fun” theme. Here’s where I’ll note that this is a sponsored post, in that I received free paint from OFMP as I’m a participant in the July contest.  Know however, that I routinely purchase and use OFMP and am a whole-hearted believer in their products. I put my money where my mouth is, friends. 🙂

It seemed most appropriate to stage this chest with a kid, (though I often hesitate to put my children on the blog!); he’s a bit rag-tag in the photos given that using him as a prop was not altogether planned (though I promise that he’s well-fed and well-loved!) 😉

As you’ll see, I left some of the original OFMP intact and some blue peeks through the Bayberry green, which I really like.  The paint crackled a bit, likely because I painted the piece in the hot sun (intentionally) for the crackling effect.

Without further ado, a toy chest and my boy:
